Spice It Up

Let's spice things up for this week's Thrifty Thursday and talk about buying spices.
I buy many items that our family uses regularly in bulk to save us money.  One of the items that I buy in bulk are spices.  I do this for two reasons.  1.) It saves us money in the long run.  2.) We use a lot of spices at our house.  When I buy spices in bulk, I pay for them by the pound rather than buying a small jar like you do at the normal grocery store.  They come in half pint and pint containers depending on how much of a spice I need and how the store I buy them at divides it up (some of their more popular spices they only sell in pint containers).  Since the spices are priced per pound and I am not buying a pound of spices, the cost is much cheaper.  I usually pay between $0.75-$1.75 for the half-pint containers and between $1.00 and $4.00 for the pint containers.  The spices that are closer to $4.00 are spices that are more expensive in general, but they are still a saving to me because if I bought them in the bottles from the grocery store, I would be paying more up front and using them up faster.  So I bet you are wondering what spices I use that I buy in bulk, right?  Here is a short list of just a few of the spices I buy in bulk:
  • Garlic Powder
  • Garlic Salt
  • Onion Powder
  • Black Pepper
  • Chili Powder
  • Italian Seasoning
  • Basil
  • Parsley
  • Oregano
  • Lemon Pepper
  • Cinnamon
Every once in awhile I do have to buy spices from the regular grocery store because I didn't get to my bulk food store quick enough.  It pains me to do so because they cost anywhere from $1.00 - $3.00 per bottle and those bottles don't last long around our house.  I do splurge on some of our favorite spices and seasonings that I buy from Tastefully Simple, but I limit how often I do this and I usually end up doing a party so that I can get a discount on the spices and even get some of them for free.

Do you buy a lot of spices?  Do you have a place that you can buy them in bulk?  Is there a topic you would like me to post about for future Thrifty Thursday posts?  I would love to hear from you.
